The History of Patek Philippe Watches
Patek and Philippe – these two words can make any watch lover’s heart beat faster. It is one of the most famous Genevan brands, but contrary to expectations, this luxurious brand does not have Suisse origins. Antoni Norbert Patek, who is the founder of the company, was Polish.
In 1831, he was forced to leave his homeland after the Russian army violently suppressed the Polish revolution. After fleeing, Patek was finally able to settle in Geneva.
After being fascinated with the Genevan heritage of watchmaking, young Patek swiftly found an entrance into the industry and began to purchase high-quality movements. He inserted them into his casings, which was a relatively straightforward procedure. The determined Patek wanted more. On May 1, 1839, he found his fellow watchmaker alongside watchmaker Francois Czapek, calling the company Patek, Czapek & Co. They are credited with making the first-ever wristwatch in 1898.
In 1844, Antoine Norbert de Patek, along with Jean Adrien Philippe, attended an exposition in Paris. It was here that Patek got to know about the talented watchmaker, Philippe, who was awarded the bronze medal for his ingenious invention - the keyless winding and hand-setting system. Before the keyless winding mechanism came into being, watches were wound conventionally and set via a separate key instead of a crown.
A year later, in 1845, the partnership between Patek and Czapek ended, as both watchmakers wanted to go their separate ways. Patek was fascinated with the innovative keyless winding mechanism; thus, he asked Philippe to join as the technical director. After Philippe agreed to it in 1851, the official title of the company changed to Patek Philippe & Cie.
The original watch crafted by Patek Philippe included a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, a split-seconds hand, and chronograph. For a company that was new and up-and-coming, this was an impressive feat at the time.
In 1932, the Stern family purchased the company, but Patek has since evolved and come a long way from its humble beginnings. In fact, in 2002, the company produced more than 40,000 watches. Today, these watches sell themselves due to their intricate mechanical features & unique looks.
Why is Buying Patek Philippe Watches great for you?
The history & precision timekeeping that comes with a Patek Philippe watch is quite appealing, and it’s one of the most well-known brands across the globe. The classic timepieces are rather renowned for their continual rise in value and are often sold at auctions for record-breaking prices.
Royals, influentials, and other luxury watch enthusiasts choose Patek Philippe to celebrate life and the important milestones that come along with it. Having been donned on the wrists of royals and celebrities alike, this brand denotes exquisite taste as well as an appreciation for finer things in life. Thus, buying a Patek Philippe watch would be great for you as well.
Patek Philippe Watches are the epitome of Prestige and Luxury
Patek Philippe is a member of the dying breed of independent Genevan watch manufacturers. They are still family-owned, which contributes to their good reputation everywhere, not just among experts. Patek Philippe themselves builds nearly every component for its watches.
Patek Philippe watches are always the crowning piece of any watch collector’s collection. More importantly, for you, their high esteem and lasting value make these timepieces fantastic investments.
The Geneva-based manufacturer offers over 200 one-of-a-kind watch models. Their style tends to be unique. With stainless steel models, Patek Philippe also uses platinum and white, rose gold, and yellow gold more than many other manufacturers.
Two of its most famous collections are the Calatrava and the Nautilus. The former has been part of the company’s catalog since 1932. The collection draws inspiration from the linear & straightforward style of Bauhaus design. The name Calatrava comes from the Order of Calatrava, whose cross serves as the company logo. The same image also adorns the crown of all the Patek watches.
The Nautilus, on the other hand, impresses its dynamic design and look and feel of a sports watch. World-famous watch designer Gerald Génta designed this watch. Patek Philippe also flexes its muscles in the Complications & Grand Complications collections. At Luxury Time NYC, you can find watches with perpetual calendars, moon phase displays, tourbillons, chimes, and world time functions.
Patek Philippe has been on the wrists of many world-renowned personalities
The list of Royal Patek Philippe clients has many interesting names, including Christian IX, Hussein Kamel of Egypt, Prince Albert, Queen Victoria, Princess Louise of Denmark, and Victor Emmanuel III of Italy. Further, when the British Queen Victoria acquired a pocket watch from Patek Philippe at the Great Exhibition of 1851 strengthened the reputation of the company with the royal dynasties of the world. From the Russian Tsar Nicholas II to Prince Albert of Monaco, royal families worldwide have stamped their seal of approval on this brand’s name.
The prominent list of Patek Philippe clientele is mind-blowing. Sporters of the Patek Philippe brand include Walt Disney, Pablo Picasso (Ref. 2497), John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, James Ward Packard, along with the celebrity couple Brad Pitt (Nautilus) and Angelina Jolie (Ref. 7000).
Another Interesting fact – Since Patek’s inception, many popes have donned these watches on their wrists. This tradition began in 1866 with Pope Pius IX and further continued by Pope Leo XII in 1878. Over the decades, many special editions have been created for the papacy. The robust connection between Patek Philippe & the Catholic Church is not that surprising, as founder Antoine Norbert Patek was a devout catholic.

AQUANAUT
The Aquanaut hit the luxury watch market in 1997. It was Patek’s answer to the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore that launched 4 years before. Sportier and casual, the brand designed the Aquanaut to capture younger audiences for the longstanding legacy of the brand. This trend has pushed demand (and pre-owned watches market values) for the Aquanaut higher than they’ve ever been. Till 2019, there were 4 key references of Aquanaut watches for men and a handful of undersized and gem-set pieces for women.
CALATRAVA COLLECTION
Launched in 1932, many watch lovers hailed the Calatrava as the most graceful and best-organized manifestations of the round watch. It ranks among the most striking and genuinely quintessential examples of the company’s style. Making a watch that looked equally good in the 1930s as it does today is no small feat. Not many brands out there have recreated this sort of magic (especially in such an understated fashion). The Calatrava line of watches is a paragon of classic elegance. The timeless perfection and the noblesse of these watches have expressed many different faces and appeals to generations of owners.
COMPLICATION COLLECTION
Apart from the elaborate timekeeping instruments that have won the hearts of many watch collectors, Patek Philippe’s collection also includes a range of complicated watches that are immensely useful in everyday situations and are extremely easy to operate.
GRAND COMPLICATION COLLECTION
Since the company’s inception in 1839, Patek Philippe has stood out with its consummate skills in horological complications, those additional functions that go beyond the display of hours, minutes & seconds. In 1989, the manufacturer presented Caliber 89, which with 33 complications, was the most complicated portable watch globally for over 25 years.
NAUTILUS
The Nautilus features an octagonal bezel with rounded corners, a relief-embossed dial, and a case construction inspired by a ship’s porthole. It has been the incarnation of casual elegance since 1976. Today, it comes in various ladies’ and men’s models, including several complicated wristwatches such as the Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph. The company offers this watch as a three-hand watch, and it comes with complications, including chronographs, annual calendars, moon phase indicators, and second time zones.
